The Aslan-factor is through the roof on this one! A truly solid, trustworthy Klone, the Mythical Overdrive Klone!
In briefly glancing at thegearpage.net, it’s not unusual to find others who are looking for the a holy grail overdrive; or a One drive to rule them all overdrive, so to speak. Once in awhile, there’s an attack of the Klone threads.
Attack of the Klones!
Klones are overdrive pedals based off of the Klon Centaur/KTR circuit. I’ve written previously about the EHX Soul Food Overdrive, which was a good, cheap klone. After this foray, my buddy, Charlie, offered to build me a Kingslayer (of which I am psyched about). In reading about the Kingslayer, I found the Mythical Overdrive by Rimrock Effects. This one in particular was the last the Gold Limited Edition run of Mythical Overdrives, so I sprang for it.
What’s it made of?
A part for part schematical clone to the famed Klon Centaur, The Mythical Overdrive boasts similar controls: Instead of Treble, a Tone knob. The rest is about the same: input, output, 9v connection. One BIG plus is the choice between 1N34 / OA128 clipping diodes. I like the 1N34 when turning up the gain, and the OA128 diodes offer a boost (of which a Thunderpuss boost already takes care of courtesy of Random Affect Pedals).
Ken from Rimrock was very helpful in talking about the circuit, it’s uses and all things klone. Here are a few of the citations he makes about the pedal:
Built using a fabricated board with top quality components including
•Mammoth Electronic Powercoated enclosure
•Professionally silkscreened graphics
•through hole fabricated PCB, no perf or vero
•1% metal film resistors
•Nichichon audio grade capacitors
•Germanium IN34A diodes
•NOS OA128 Telefunken diodes
•Hi intensity LED
•Davies 1470AQ knobs with metal set screw
•All ICs socketed
•Hand built and tested in the USA by an actual guitar player, not a robot in a factory overseas
It’s a solidly built pedal. No rattling occurs when gently shaking the unit (always a good sign).
Responsive, responsive, responsive. This pedal boosts, yes…and it makes your signal ‘alive‘. Hard to describe, yet ‘alive‘. I like this pedal as a light boost to widen out the clean tone. Do I have extensive experience with Klons? nope. Yet I truly appreciate what this thing does to my clean tone. When driving the signal, I totally feel the need to almost play jazzy chords up the neck. Open chords hold a solid crunch. There is a roundness to the tone as this tapers off the bass and treble modestly. I’m not sure if this is what Finnegan had in mind when designing the original Klon, but the Mythical Overdrive does the job well. I auditioned this with a Strat with Klein Epic 59’s and a Tele with D.Allen Cheetahs.
This pedal makes your signal stand out with a hi-fi pop w/ famed HAUNTING MIDS. I cannot compare this to a Klon, but I’ll leave that to Curtis Kent or Gearmanndude who actually have access to said device.
