Country twang? Focused crunch? Jabberwocky clean? No Problem. The Keeley Compressor Guitar Effect Pedal
7, count em’, 7 years have I had my guitar goosed by this magic machine. A dear friend (Thanks, Ryan!) surprised me one day by sending me two incredible pedals: The Flexi 4×2 and the Keeley Compressor.
My buddy had demoed the comp for me a few weeks earlier, making his Fralin loaded strat attain another level of sweetness and ‘togetherness’ ;-). I couldn’t stop playing that pedal! The fact that we were playing through a tiny 5 watt Roland Cube didn’t stop us! Our ears heard incredible tones coming from that small amp! Keeley is the premier name in compressor pedals.
The 2-knob version has controls for Sustain and Level, with internal trim pots that control the Clipping and the Attack. These two internal controls are externally tweakable in the 4-knob version.
- Metal film 1% resistors
- Teflon wire
- Silver Solder
- True Bypass
Strats, teles and other single coil guitars will enjoy the way this pedal sweetens, fattens, and pronounces the notes you play. Beware the Level knob, as it can really boost the normally ‘minute’ underlying noise in the compression. Tried other pedals like the Boss Comp/Sus and the Visual Sound Comp, and the Keeley shines above the rest.
Is this the highest quality compressor one can buy? No, of course not. Yet for a pedal sized variant of rackmounted dedicated compression units, this runs alongside the best of them. I have since moved on to the Walrus Audio Deep Six Compressor which features a blend knob. The difference is subtle, but I did really like the way that the Keeley squashed my guitar’s tone just right.
