Yes, Ryan, you were right about the FET. The Boss FA-1 Clone!
So a friend tells me about guitar preamps one day, and I thought he was talking snake oil. Turns out, he was right. The snake oil works, and it changes things entirely. It changed my mind enough that I got one myself and started to experiment with my guitar tone.
U2’s ‘Edge’ is famed to always have his 1980’s FA-1 Guitar Preamp ‘ON’.
Trying to find a Fa-1 on ebay, you will find them starting at $300, for a then $50 pedal. Obscene.
So, instead of paying that crazy amount, I turned to BYOC (Build Your Own Clone) for their copy of the Boss FA-1.
The difference between the Original pedal and this one is that the BYOC version has a True Bypass switch installed.
I really, really like this pedal. But the enclosure that BYOC sent is garbage.
I turned to Pedal Parts Plus, as suggested by Charlie, and scored a spicy little FA-1 Clone. There is much to write about this pedal. It makes the pedalboard after it come to life.
It’s not a compressor…but a great, great tonic enhancer. Bass and Treble are balanced. The controls are simple enough to figure out, and the volume will tear a person’s head off. This pedal is loud.
It’s as if this pedal should be labeled ‘TONE’. That’s something one cannot write about many pedals nowadays.
I haven’t had a chance to mess with this too much, but am liking what I hear so far.

Pick up a BB Preamp pedal to get close to this sound!
