All this delay in a small package that could break a window, the Boss DD-7 Digital Delay Pedal has got what it takes to stay in the ring.
As a follow up post to the DD-3, the DD-7 utilizes the same type of circuitry and approach to the delay circuit. So, unlike the DD-5 and DD-6 which boast a more sterile repeat sound, the DD-7 repeats exactly what was played, without repeatedly reprocessing each repeat.
First of all, in the unassuming Boss Packaging, the Boss DD-7 under promises features, yet over delivers on it’s road-worthiness. The construction of the internal components is mainly on PCB boards, well soldered leads with covered inputs. The FET switching promises close to the 10 million hits that Visual Sounds promises. There is stereo input and output in addition to an expression pedal jack. So, after dreaming about crazy oscillations and all, I settles on just using a simple tap tempo switch into the exp jack. K.I.S.S.
The settings can be seen here, including various ranges of time, reverse, modulated, and analog. The HOLD function is something I wrote about in my post about the Boss DD-3.
The purity of the inputted signal is what I worried about. Honestly, warmth matters greatly to me. I don’t want to plug in a vintage voiced guitar and be greeted with icepick-to-my-ear treble on the other side. The Boss DD-7 delivered incredible sound, tone intact. So, my favorite setting on this was the analog. I have been a fan of delay pedals for years now, took the first leap into digital delay with the Flashback X4, and then started to ‘trust’ my ears after having some preconceived notions about the Boss DD series.
So, oscillations happen with a simple tweak of the knobs while crouched over the pedal itself. Would it be easier with an expression pedal? Yes! Also, to save room on the pedal board, just get a tap tempo, and tweak the knobs when you need to.
For such a simple pedal, complex sounds are light work for it. My favorite thing to do is to stack a DD-3 into this set to a nearly un-noticable slapback.
