Scripture: Genesis 43
1 Now the famine was still severe in the land. 2 So when they had eaten all the grain they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, “Go back and buy us a little more food.”
23 “It’s all right,” he said. “Don’t be afraid. Your God, the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks; I received your silver.” Then he brought Simeon out to them.
30 Deeply moved at the sight of his brother, Joseph hurried out and looked for a place to weep. He went into his private room and wept there.
34 When portions were served to them from Joseph’s table, Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as anyone else’s. So they feasted and drank freely with him.
It looks like they forgot about Simeon. How long did it take them to burn through the food? Either way, they were to get more.
Coming clean to Joseph regarding the silver the brothers had discovered in their sacks (which they previously had offered him). Joseph fused a miracle, and set their minds at ease!
Joseph now was face to face with his birth brother, driven to tears at the will of his emotions.
The other concern was what would happen to Benjamin, although Simeon was now returned to the brothers. The big plates of food in from of Benjamin stopped their speculation on his demise.
Do I take action based on my own need? Or do I go after my loved ones in order to be sure that they are safe?
Mercy is always welcome.
We are emotional people. Situations demand that we emote.
This mercy and emotion was again shared in grace to people who didn’t deserve it.
God – Help me to trust you for the safety of my loved ones. Also, help me to share the gift of mercy, allowing myself to be overwhelmed by the need to reach out to others in love.
